Here in Pensacola, FL, it’s time to prepare your AC for spring. As the weather starts to get warmer, you will want to be sure that your home is cool and comfortable whenever you need it to feel that way. Here are seven basic steps you should always follow to make sure your air conditioner is ready for warm weather.

Central AC is Always a Better Option

You may want to consider installing central AC before it gets a lot warmer if you don’t currently have it. Although there is an initial investment involved, central AC will keep you much more comfortable throughout your home and save money on cooling costs in the long run.

Look at Your SEER Rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio)

Your air conditioner’s efficiency is rated based on a scale of 13 to 25, which is known as a SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. Higher numbers indicate better efficiency, which means you can cool your house using less electricity. If your AC has a low SEER, you may be able to save on cooling costs by replacing it with a more efficient unit.

Make Sure Your Air Conditioner is Not Frozen

Ice may be visible on the outside of the unit, but it may also be deep inside where you can’t see it. Until the ice has been removed, the air conditioner won’t work properly.

Check Your Thermostat

Do you have an old-fashioned dial thermostat? You may want to upgrade to a more modern programmable thermostat while you’re getting ready for spring and summer. If you already have a programmable thermostat, make sure it is working and see if it needs batteries.

Inspect Your Refrigerant

Check the refrigerant level in your AC to make sure it isn’t low. Your AC can’t run properly without the correct amount of refrigerant.

Seal All Refrigerant Leaks

If you discover low refrigerant levels, it means there is a leak somewhere, which must be found and fixed. Damage to the components of the AC can occur if it’s not.

Preparing your AC for spring doesn’t take long, and it will save you from suddenly not being able to cool your home when the weather is very hot.

Check Your Ducts for Tear or Wear

A torn or worn duct can’t move cool air where it’s needed. Check to make sure all visible ducts are sealed. Follow these seven steps, and you will be nice and cool all spring and summer.
